History

The first set of law students were admitted into the Faculty of Law in 1985. The Faculty produced her first graduate in 1989. During the period, the Faculty was part of the old Anambra State University of Technology (ASUTECH), Awka campus. In 1991, following the split of the old Anambra State into Anambra and Enugu States, the Awka and Nnewi campuses of the former ASUTECH were constituted into Nnamdi Azikiwe University by the Anambra State Edict No. 5 of November 26, 1991. Nnamdi Azikiwe University was taken over by the Federal Government pursuant to Decree No. 34 of July 15, 1992, now Cap. N139, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

The specific target of the Faculty since 1985 has been to harness human and material facility for expansion of the frontiers of scholarship in the teaching and study of law. The idea is to develop a robust and aggressive academic student body and graduates, based on the principles of dynamism, independence, character and learning. It is, therefore, the unflinching resolve of the Faculty that its laudable efforts over the years in promoting a high degree of quality legal education are progressively enhanced and sustained. In addition to effective lecture delivery system, the Faculty maintains a functional Library which is furnished with relevant law books and journals on various law subjects and an e-library which is accessible to both the staff and students. The facilities in the e-library include foreign and local databases.

Moreover, the provision for law clinic domiciled in the Faculty of Law building, among other things, makes room for the refining of the students’ skill in law. In the same vein, the Mobile Law Clinic introduced by the Faculty makes legal services available to students and also takes legal services to nearby communities in Anambra State in a conscious effort to promote the principle of the rule of law.
